Workboxes

I just found out from Jamin's Freebies on 4/2 about something called workboxes. There is information about them at Working the Workboxes.  Apparently the goal is to help with organization and to encourage independent study.

Some of the things the writer of the article inclues in the boxes are:

--Bible stuff
--phonics/spelling pages
--jump roping
--any independent science reading/lapbooking assignments
--copywork
--reading
--math
--some sort of flashcard game; either for math or music
--crafts (last week they created a horn book to go along with early American History)
--learning games
--practice the piano card
--other notebooking/lapbooking activities

Jamin also has some other links listed about workboxes.

This might be a great time to investigate this idea, so there'd be time to start it next school year.

Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Reading Program enrollment

Pizza Hut's Book It! Reading program is open for enrollment for next school year already.  If you're not familiar with the program, you set a reading goal for each student each month and when it's achieved, the get a certificate for a free personal pizza.  It's fun and easy.  Here's the link: Book It Program

Awesome Opportunity for High School Students

I just found out about this today and had to share.   Here's the basics.  Various Devry University locations are offering classes during the summer for juniors and seniors for FREE!  It's called Passport2College and they are offering certain classes for only the cost of books and supplies.  What a way to earn both high school and college credits at the same time for FREE!  Did I mention the classes were FREE?!?

Here's some  more detailed info from a brochure about it.

What?
DeVry’s Passport2College Program is available to high school students who will be entering their junior or senior year in the Fall 2010.

No Tuition Costs
Qualified students may take one course per session of the courses listed on the next page, which could
provide them with college credits.

Who?
You should apply for the Passport2College Program if:

􀂜 You will be graduating from high school and want to get a jump-start on your college education.
􀂜 You have an interest in business and/or technology.
􀂜 You have a GPA of 2.7 or higher.
􀂜 You are a U.S. citizen or have permanent residency status.

Why?
􀂜 Earn college credit from a regionally accredited school while you are still in high school without having to pay tuition.
􀂜 Take courses taught by highly qualified, passionate and dedicated college professors.
􀂜 Have a flexible schedule that fits your life so you can still enjoy the summer.
􀂜 Make your college admissions application stand out over your competition.

Do you want more information?  Go to Devry Missouri locations  and hit the link or search for one where you are.  Apparently, not every location is doing it, but I would think it's worth the look-see.
