My first printable--Math Fact Family Circles

I make a lot of things for our personal use. For some reason, it just now clicked with me that I can share them with you! I know I always appreciate free printables, and I hope that the ones I share can be useful to you.

My first printable is Fact Family Circles for math. It's a graphic organizer which can be used for either addition/subtraction or multiplication/division.
Let me show you how it works:

I know. Simple right? What I usually do is print one equation in the first quadrant and allow her to take it from there.
So, if I put 3+4=, she would answer it and then write in the other quadrants, 4+3=7, 7-4=3, and 7-3=4. In the picture above, she wrote all the facts for 10x5 herself.
The link is available above under printables and, of course, HERE.

HomeschoolConvention.com--soooo coooool!

I really do love homeschool conventions and conferences. Let me tell you about the newest, coolest one, yet.

HomeschoolConvention.com is what I'm talking about!
It also does Home Educating Family BlogThe Well Planned Day Planner, and more.

It's 365/24/7.  That's right. You can attend this convention whenever you want. Monday night when you can't sleep. The middle of July when it's over 100 degrees. Thanksgiving morning when you're still trying to get your bird to thaw. Anytime!

It's free. Yup. I don't think I really need to expound on this one much. I know there are a lot of conventions I'd like to attend, but can't financially. This convention is for my budget. No gas, no lodging, no child care, no admission charge.

Vendors. There are four exhibit halls where you can go from booth to booth with only a click of your mouse. You can speak to people in the booth "real time" or through messaging. You can put fliers in you tote for later download and sometimes the vendors will give you freebies or convention deals. Again, this will be year round, not just one weekend a year.
This is a picture of on of the exhibit halls:

Workshops. It looks like there will be at least four workshops a week. Again, they will be available 24/7, so you don't have to worry about which one to attend or which one to miss. You can attend them all!

Homeschool 101. A source for the questions you have about homeschooling.

Explore Curriculum has links to all the great reviews done by Home Educating Family.

AND MORE

The Homeschool Convention just opened on Monday, March 26. Not everything is open quite yet. Most of the workshops, for instance, won't start until April and some resources until May. Even so, it is a great online resource and refreshment anytime you need it.

All you have to do is register and you have a Homeschool Convention at your finger tips!

Ladies Home Journal Magazine--FREE

Several have asked me where I get all my freebies. Here's a fresh one I found to share with you.

You can get a free subscription to Ladies' Home Journal just by clicking HERE or the picture to the left. You will just need to fill out your basic info. It will be the digital version, so you can read it on your device or your computer.  Actually, I think that would be pretty convenient. I get quite a stack of free magazines, and it's always fun trying to get rid of them!

She hasn't cried--My daughter dealing with the death of her grandfather

Mija in her dress for the funeral
Last week on Monday afternoon, my step-father died. He was mija's only living grandfather and now he's gone. She actually was with us as we rushed to the hospital after being told he had stopped breathing, and witnessed my sister collapsing and sobbing in my arms as she told me he had died.
We explained to her that Papa was in heaven with Jesus now. His body is still here and will one day be raised, but what's most important is that the real him was in heaven.  She's heard this before since we've dealt with a few deaths but, of course, none this close to her. She didn't cry.

The next day, she had asked me why abuelita (grandma) had wanted to wear colorful clothing while one of her aunts insisted on black. I explained that was the two sides of death for a Christian. Abuelita wanted to focus on being happy that Papa was with Jesus and knowing that we would see him again. The other side of the death is a sadness that we don't get to see him now for awhile, so we'll miss him. It's the sad part that makes us wear dark colors. She didn't cry.

She also wanted to know about the kind of things I had to do with my mom and sisters at the funeral home. She's never been involved or aware of the "backstage" elements, so to speak. I explained how the casket goes in a vault which goes in the ground. I explained how the visitation and service was going to work. I explained how papa would buried in his Marine uniform (yes, it still fit from 1960) and have a color guard. She didn't cry.

On Wednesday, we worked on figuring out what clothes she was going to wear. Abuelita went with me to pick up a few things for her. I wanted her to be a little girl yet somewhat somber. I had a cute black tunic with white and pink dots with capris for the visitation. We picked up a cute dress that was also black with white and pink dots for the funeral. She liked everything when we got home. She helped me pick out the background and music for the video I made. She went to AWANA that evening. She didn't cry.

Thursday was visitation. I thought maybe seeing Papa's body in the casket might make it real for her. She came up with me and looked and was quickly ready to go play with her cousins. I did notice, however, whenever she walked past the casket, she would peek in. She had made a hand-print flower (still planning on blogging about making it) for Papa on Monday and since he passed before she could give it to him, we put it in the casket. She found out that some of her cousins were writing notes to put into the casket the next day. When we came home, she made it a priority to write a note and draw a picture of her and Papa. I will share it here just because I thought it was so precious, but please don't let her know that I shared it with you.
What is also so cute about it was how accurate she tried make the picture. Papa always had his hair "high and tight" and was mostly bald right on top. While he was tall, however, he didn't wear high-waters! She still didn't cry.

Friday was the funeral. We got dressed and I threatened reminded her several times about being solemn during the funeral. She's used to sitting through church, so it wasn't a foreign concept, but there's a different attitude during a funeral than during a regular church service. She was there while we watched them close the lid to the casket and there when mom let out a gut-wrenching sob upon seeing the Marines salute the arrival of the hearse. Mija relished in the food and fellowship after the funeral. She didn't cry.

The next day we had a tea party where we discussed important things like the dogs, art, my sister's house being clean (unlike ours), and the pros and cons of possibly living in one relative's basement vs. another's garage now that my husband is unemployed for the second time in less than a year. I also asked her which was her "favorite" part of the funeral and which was the least "favorite." Mija's favorite was the pastor telling stories about Papa liking buses. Her least favorite was watching them close the coffin. She still didn't cry.

Me? Yes, I've cried numerous times and in numerous ways. My least favorite part was some individuals not understanding the importance and significance of the pastor taking the time to share the Gospel during the funeral. It makes me concerned. Oh, and for future reference, share all the stories you want about me during the visitation, but I want my funeral to be about celebration and salvation. Sorry if you think it's boring.  In fact, if you think sharing salvation is boring, you probably need to hear it the most!

Mija still hasn't cried.

Should I be concerned?

My Step-father Died

I just wanted to let you know that I may not be around much for a few days. My step-father died Monday afternoon.
Prayers appreciated.

Weight loss and Home Education

I've been working on losing weight. I've been using My Fitness Pal. It's been really handy and easy. I've been doing it for almost a month.
Home education, however, is not that conducive to losing weight. Just check out my posts from last week.
We made cookies for Purim. Hamantaschen.
Cooking is a great learning opportunity. The recipe we used only made about two dozen cookies which would have been enough to have a few and share the rest if you aren't weight-loss challenged like I am. We did end up saving a few to give to our pastor, but most went to our family. I'll say family instead of "me." You'll never know the truth since the evidence is gone!

Then we did the cool moon phases using Oreo cookies.
Now if my hubby had picked up regular Oreos, it wouldn't have been a problem. I don't like Oreos. Instead, he purchased a generic brand that had chocolate Oreo-type cookies and the golden Oreo-type cookies. They are the ones with the vanilla wafer instead of the chocolate wafer. Those are addicting. All that to say that the moon phases were good and the golden Oreo cookies were even better!
Even with those sacrifices I made because for mija's education, I've managed to make some progress.
One of the things I've been doing is trying to get some more walking in my day. For someone my size, walking is about the extent of what I can do! Leave it to mija to help me out. After church on Sunday, my husband said he would get the van and pick us up at the door. Mija stated for everyone to hear, "Why don't we just all walk to the van, so Mommy can get more exercise and loose more weight." Nothing like accountability whether you ask for it our not!
Oh, if you're on My Fitnes Pal, let me know if you'd like to be my friend. I'm mrspriceisright, of course!

Oreo Cookie Phases of the Moon--Must do!

I LOVED THIS IDEA!!
In honor of Oreo's 100th birthday last week, How to Homeschool my Child came up with a really cool way to demonstrate the phases of the moon! Check there for the details.
We've been doing astronomy this year, so any fun thing to review or teach is always appreciated. Here's how ours ended up looking.
Mommy's Moons

Mija's Moons

Hubby's Moons
The hardest part was labeling the plates. The easiest part was the eating!

Bible Time--Getting spiritual exhortation from my daughter

If mija has a good day behavior-wise, she gets to read for awhile after her bedtime. She usually likes to have a "Bible Time" during that time. She'll read her Bible or one of her Bible story books. Sometimes she even copies a passage in her notebook. It's a blessing to see her desiring the Word of God on her own.

The other night while I sat on the sofa, she hurried out of her room and gave me a note and ran back to her room. It took me a little while to get to it. After all, I was just expecting another cute picture or the like. This is what I found.
I was touched. My daughter and just copied something. She has specifically copied something she wanted me to have. It was such a blessing to receive Biblical exhortation from my daughter. Looking forward to the years ahead as we exhort each other in the Lord.
Oh, and don't you like my portrait?
