Wednesday Website---Delightful Long Division in Math

After an awesome day with long division, I decided to share some division helps and websites.

First, we used the phrase "Does McDonald's serve burgers?" as a reminder about the steps of long division.

  • Does--Divide
  • McDonald's--Multiply
  • Serve--Subtract
  • Burgers--Bring Down
Second, we used graph paper to keep the problem neat and organized. You can print some up HERE. We used the two lines per inch selection.

Here's a video to watch:

And here are some websites:

Wednesday Websites: Free Summer Bowling

Bowling bowler girl
Bowling has an interesting history. I've shared before about Martin Luther's role!
There are two programs that provide 2 free games of bowling everyday for kids all through the summer.

AMF Summer Unplugged Free Bowling--One nice thing about this program is that it also offers a discount summer pass, so parents can also participate.

Kids Bowl Free--Various bowling centers around the US and Canada.

You still have to pay for shoe rental with both programs.

Wednesday Websites--Math Word Problems

Math word problems are the nemesis of many astudent including mija. We've been working on them exclusively for the last two weeks. One thing I've noticed is that if she does them online, she's not so intimidated by them.

Here's two sites we've been using:

Math Playground--Mija has really enjoyed "Word Problems with Katie."

Syvum has Kid's Math Word Problems 1 and Kid's Math Word Problems 2.

I felt like some chemistry this week for science.
A great reason to use Chemistry Cat!!

The Homeschool Mom offers an e-book on how to make your own periodic table.

Middle School Chemistry is just that. It's a site that offers lessons plans for middle school chemistry. It has activities and multi-media. Some if not all could be adapted for other ages.

Chemistry for Kids has experiments, of course, but also games, videos, lessons, quizzes, and facts.

Sheppard Software is known for all its educational games including these games dealing with the elements and periodic table.

Creative Chemistry has a lot of fun resources including printables, puzzles, and more.

Enchanted Learning offers many printables and coloring sheets on frogs. Some are only accessible by members, but many are free to all!

Wednesday Websites--Music

My post yesterday encouraged me to share more about some music sites I use or would like to use.

Classics for Kids has the timeline I used yesterday as well as a lot of information about the orchestra and instrument families. Many selections of music are available

G Major Music Theory is a great resource for teaching music theory, piano, and more. There is a free music theory curriculum with flashcards. There is also free sheet music for various skill levels.

Songs for Teaching has all kinds of songs for all kinds of subjects. Want something about counting? How about Latin, grammar, or environmental science? So many different subjects with so many different songs. Remember, music is one of the best ways to memorize.

The Piano Student offers links to several other site. There are links for composer biographies, free sheet music, worksheets and even video music lessons.

Wednesday Websites--Poetry

April is National Poetry Month!

Of course, there is studying the rhythm and rhyme pattern if there is one. You can see if there is a pattern in theme, topic or phrase. You can relate it to the historical time it was written or the science it mentions. When you read Langston Hughes' "Dream Variations", for instance, learn about the Civil Rights Movement and trees. Don't forget that writing poetry is an option, too!

Poetry 4 Kids offer lessons for writing poetry. I recommend an acrostic poem if you are just starting out! It also offers a lot of other poetry resources.

Scholastic offers a lot of teacher resources for National Poetry Month.

At Poets.org, you search by poems or poets. There are even videos of various poems. Classics and more.

DLTK offers this collection of spring poems. This is a little more of a  "kid" friendly selection.

Poetry for Kids offers all kinds of poetry based links including places to post poetry you've written, a link to a rhyming dictionary, and more.

Readwritethink has some cool online tools that actually help write various types of poetry.

Apples 4 the Teacher has a thematic list of poems which includes various holidays. How about memorizing a poem for Armed Forces Day or Bird Day. (You know how I feel about every day being a holiday!)

Wednesday Websites--American Revolution--History

We will soon be learning about the American Revolution in history, so I wanted to find some sites that would add to our learning.

First are a few that I already have listed on my Helpful Homeschool Websites page.

Liberty's Kids--It was a TV show which can still be found at the library. Even without the show, there are some fun information and activities on the site.

Archiving Early America--This has a lot of cool information from the founding documents to the obits of the Founding Fathers.

George Washington's World is presented by MountVernon.org. You can play games while exploring Mount Vernon, do jigsaw puzzles, and learn about the archaeology used there.

Here are more I found:

Kids Konnect has a page about the American Revolution which includes some fast facts and a lot of links about the subjects.

Mr4. Nussbaum offers some cool resources. There are timelines, activities such as word searches, videos, and printables some of which can be integrated into other subjects.

Fun Hands on Unit Studies has a six week unit on the American Revolution. What's really fun about this site is that it really is hands on. Making mop caps. Reenact the crossing of the Delaware. Make a secret code. You get the idea.

Do you have any good ideas about books or sites?

Wednesday Websites--Science

After participating in World Science Day last week, I decided we needed to share some science websites.

Answers in Genesis is an awesome ministry an they have Answers for Kids which means all the science there has a Biblical Worldview. There is a lot about animals and there are also videos and activities.

Steve Spangler Science - Making Science Fun!
Steve Spangler Science sells all kinds of science supplies, but they also have a whole page of science experiments. I like it because the pages separates them by subject and each experiment explains the science behind it. I like that because a lot of experiments just seem like fun activities with no explanations about what it demonstrates.

Scholastic has The Magic School Bus page. Mija enjoys the games and activities, but was disappointed to find only clips from the show and the book link was to purchase the books not for online books. (I understand why, but she was expecting more.) There is also a link for parents/teachers with experiments, printables, etc.

With Easter coming up, it might be nice to remember Candy Experiments. It even has some specific experimnts for Easter eggs and Easter candy! They even have a book.

Wednesday Websites--World Math Day and more math

Today is World Math Day. Actually, it started yesterday since today started yesterday in the eastern hemisphere.

Anyway...

I've posted before about how we enjoy the day and website. Join mija today as she compete against kids all over the world and against herself.
Once you sign up, you'll be notified ahead of time next year and given about a month worth of practice time beforehand. We like having all that extra, fun math practice, as well.

Visual Fractions has been a handy site as mija has been working on common denominators and equivalent fractions.

And don't forget that next week is Pi Day. Visit my post from last year for links and ideas!

Wednesday Websites--art and craft

I'm starting a new series on Wednesdays. I'll be sharing websites that I come across.

I'll also continue to post them on my Helpful Homeschool Website page.
Have you used my page before?

Today's topic will be Arts and Crafts.

One email I look forward to checking out comes from All Free Kids Crafts. The ideas I really like I pin. You can always just go check out the site instead of getting emails.
AllFreeKidsCrafts.com

Everyday Art was a community art project from a few years ago, but each assignment is still available online. There is a gallery of photos of projects that were submitted at the time. Some projects take months, some only a few minutes. Some cute ideas to use or use as a jump off place.

Garden of Praise is really cool. It has entries for famous artists which tell their stories and show a variety of their artwork. Then it has online puzzles, games and printables which review the artist and what was covered. These are at an elementary level but enjoyable for all.
The site has a lot of free resources on other subjects, too!

What are some resources you use? Please share!
